How Age Is Calculated
Calculating age might seem simple at first glance—just subtract your birth year from the current year. However, finding someone's exact age in years, months, and days requires complex calendar arithmetic to account for the varying lengths of months and the presence of leap years.
Age Calculation Formula
Our calculator uses the universally accepted standard method for calculating age:
- Calculate Years: Subtract the birth year from the current year. If the current month and day are earlier than your birth month and day, subtract one year.
- Calculate Months:Find the difference in months. If the current day is earlier than your birth day, subtract one month and "borrow" the days from the previous month.
- Calculate Days: Find the exact number of days remaining after the full months have been accounted for.
Examples
Scenario 1: Standard Calculation
If you were born on May 15, 1990, and today is August 20, 2023: You are exactly 33 Years, 3 Months, and 5 Days old.
Scenario 2: The Leap Year Baby (Leapling)
If you were born on February 29, 2000, your birthday only occurs once every four years. On non-leap years, most legal systems and calculators (including ours) celebrate your birthday on March 1st.
