What Is the Serial Number of Challan in Income Tax Filing?
Hi everyone,
While filing my Income Tax Return (ITR), I came across the "Serial Number of Challan (Col 3)" field under the Advance Tax and Self-Assessment Tax Payments section.
I have already paid my Self-Assessment Tax and downloaded the challan receipt from the Income Tax portal.
On the challan receipt, I can see the following details:
- BSR Code: 2010003
- Date of Deposit: 29-Jul-2026
- Challan No: 02461
- CIN: 12345900798877XXXX
My question is:
Which value should be entered as the "Serial Number of Challan (Col 3)" while filing the ITR? Is it the Challan Number shown on the receipt?
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Yes, the "Serial Number of Challan (Col 3)" in your Income Tax Return should be the Challan Number mentioned on your tax payment receipt.
Based on the challan details:
- BSR Code (Col 1): 2010003
- Date of Deposit (Col 2): 29-Jul-2026
- Serial Number of Challan (Col 3): 02461
- Tax Paid (Col 4): ₹92,760
The Income Tax Department uses the combination of:
- BSR Code
- Date of Deposit
- Challan Serial Number
to uniquely identify your tax payment. These details are also embedded within the CIN (Challan Identification Number).
So, in your case, enter 02461 as the Serial Number of Challan (Col 3). The number should match exactly as shown on the challan receipt.
You can also verify the challan details through Form 26AS or the AIS portal if needed.
